Two quilts by Leah Dennison have been accepted for the Fabrics of Legacies exhibition at the Lincoln Center Galleries in Fort Collins, Co. This exhibition highlights the current work of the finest national and international quilt artists. The show runs October 7 — November 13.

Frontiers for Maxwell

Barbara Yates Beasley’s quilt, Maxwell Wolf was accepted in the show Frontiers: Colorado Inspirations and the Innovative Fiber Art of FRCQ which will run from May 1 through August 3, 2011 at the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum, Golden, CO.

Now that the winter cold seems to have loosened its grip and the weather is warming up, it might be a good time to venture out for a day of quilt show viewing. The Bead Lounge is once again hosting a show with quilts from, Barbara Yates Beasley and Cynthia Ann Morgan, through March 6. Down the street at the Quilter’s Studio they have an ever-changing display of quilts from local artists. Across Main Street at the Sun Rose Café is an exhibit of quilts from the Quilter’s Studio Art quilt group that Cynthia teaches. That show will hang through April 2. Proceed around the corner to 4^th and Coffman and you will find Pass it On hanging through February 18 at The Old Firehouse. Hopefully you still have time and energy to drive South on Main to the Longmont Museum to visit the America Celebrates! quilt exhibit through March 13.

What has made Longmont the haven for quilts during February? I do not know, but this is a great chance to see the wide range of styles, techniques, and inspiration that make up an art quilt

Doodle with a Purpose

Challenges are an important part of the Boulder Loose Threads. They can provide an opportunity to learn new techniques, push us out of our comfortable space. and in the process grow as artists. One of our latest challenges that can be seen at the Bead Lounge is based on Zentangle® drawings/doodles.

After coming across the Zentangle® website I was struck by the similarity to quilting with the repeating patterns. I challenged the group to create our own small doodles and then use them as the inspiration for a quilt. It was decided that the common thread through the quilts should be the size, no larger than 24″ square, and use of lime green. It sounds at first like an easy task but as we found out it was a challenge.

I have been the one in the group to do less abstract and more representational work. I now keep a small sketch book with me at all times and have filled some 20 pages with doodles. It can be addictive to doodle, and can be picked up or stopped at any point.

I still love doing dog/animal quilts but there will be more abstract quilts in the future.

Stash and Feed Sacks

If you are the creative type you know all about stash. For some it is a closet of fabric, every color of DMC floss, trays of pastels, or stacks of paper. Whatever it takes to create your particular art. Combine that with growing up during the depression and you have Betty.

We keep the stash even knowing that we have more than we will ever use. So what happens when you die and all that wonderful stuff is left behind. If you are lucky like Betty, you have family that understands about passing along your treasures. This is how the members of Boulder Loose Threads came upon one of our challenges.

Four Sunflower Feed sacks, 4 artists, 1 challenge. The result is 4 quilts related but very different. Here we get a peek at two quilts.

Challenge Group at The Quilter’s Studio

Cynthia is moderating an exciting monthly challenge group at The Quilter’s Studio in Longmont on the 2nd Saturday of each month at 10:30 am. Each month the group is given a design challenge to complete an art quilt by the following month. It’s modeled after the tv show, Project Runway, and we focus on getting outside your comfort zone. We’ve had much fun and learning and good results from the challenges….a few examples below. Join in anytime or stop by to observe. Wild Heather Show

Challenges is the theme for the Boulder Loose Threads show at the Wild Heather Quilt shop in Englewood during October 2009. During our time as a group we have set many challenges for ourselves which gave us many grouping to choose from for the show.

Starting with each members interpretation of the name Boulder Loose Threads or BLT to our last round robin challenge that was completed just in time for the show.

Also included is the 5-panel Reflections of Norway that just returned from a traveling show.

Leah took 2nd place at the 28th Annual Fabrics of Legacies show at the Lincoln Center in Fort Collins. The show will be up through Aughust 28, 2009. This is Leah’s first award. Congratulations!
